Busitema University has taken another significant step in expanding its regional and international footprint after formalizing a strategic partnership with Kibabii University of Kenya. The partnership is expected to unlock new opportunities in research, innovation, academic collaboration, and student and staff mobility, while reinforcing the University's commitment to building global partnerships that drive knowledge creation and sustainable development.

The milestone was marked during a high-level visit by a Busitema University delegation to Kibabii University on 16 th July 2026, where the two institutions formally exchanged a duly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The Busitema University delegation was led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Waako, and comprised the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Associate Prof. Saphina Biira; the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Joseph Lwanyaga; the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Education, Associate Prof. David Olema; the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Sciences, Dr. Godfrey Lubadde; and the Principal Internationalization and Partnerships Officer, Ms. Harriet Nabirye.

The engagement brought together leaders from both universities to explore practical avenues for collaboration aimed at enhancing the quality and relevance of higher education while addressing regional development priorities. Discussions focused on joint research and innovation, staff and student exchange programmes, academic programme development, capacity building, innovation and entrepreneurship, and community engagement.

The formal exchange of the Memorandum of Understanding signals a shared commitment by the two universities to foster a long-term partnership founded on academic excellence, innovation and mutual growth. The agreement provides a structured framework for implementing collaborative initiatives that will strengthen institutional capacity, promote knowledge exchange, and generate solutions to challenges affecting communities across the region.

To translate the partnership into tangible outcomes, both institutions agreed to establish a joint implementation committee to coordinate collaborative activities and monitor progress. The committee will develop a comprehensive implementation plan with clear timelines, identify priority projects for immediate execution, facilitate regular progress review meetings, and mobilise resources to support joint programmes and initiatives.

The partnership is expected to create meaningful opportunities for students, researchers and academic staff through collaborative research, knowledge exchange, curriculum enhancement, innovation-driven learning and increased international exposure. It also positions both universities to leverage their complementary strengths in advancing science, technology and innovation for sustainable socio-economic transformation.
