Busitema University Strengthens Ties with Tsinghua University in Public Health and Research Exchange
A significant step toward international research collaboration took place recently at the Natural Products Research and Innovation Centre on the Busitema University campus. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Waako, met with the LIGHT Project Network to welcome a visiting scholar, Dr. Jed Xu, from the Tsinghua University Vanke School of Public Health. Dr Xu is currently participating in an exchange program under the BRIGHT Network Programme.
During the meeting, Prof. Waako warmly welcomed Dr Xu and expressed his strong support for deeper research partnerships between Busitema University and leading universities in China. He reaffirmed his commitment to creating opportunities that go beyond simple agreements. Instead, his focus is on real action: building capacity, encouraging academic exchange, driving innovation, and launching joint research initiatives.
So, what does this mean for us at Busitema? It means that our work in public health and natural products research is gaining international recognition. The Natural Products Research and Innovation Centre is home to valuable knowledge about locally available solutions to health challenges. By working with a scholar from Tsinghua University—one of the world’s most respected institutions—we are opening doors for our staff and students.
Dr. Xu’s visit under the BRIGHT Network Programme is not just a formality. It is a working exchange. He is here to learn from us, and we are here to learn from him. This two-way flow of ideas is exactly what Prof. Waako wants to see more of. He believes that collaboration with Chinese universities will lead to stronger research output, better training for our scholars, and practical innovations that can improve public health.
For a student or researcher at Busitema, this means new possibilities. It could mean working on joint projects with international partners, accessing new laboratories and data, or even travelling to China as part of an exchange. The Vice Chancellor’s message was clear: Busitema is ready to work with the best in the world.
As Prof. Waako put it during the meeting, no university can afford to work alone anymore. The health challenges we face—from infectious diseases to the search for better natural remedies—require teamwork across borders. By welcoming scholars like Dr. Jed Xu and engaging with networks like BRIGHT and LIGHT, Busitema is positioning itself as a serious player in global research.
This visit may have been a short one, but the work that follows will last much longer. The University looks forward to seeing the fruits of this collaboration in the form of new studies, shared knowledge, and stronger academic ties between Busitema and China.
We will continue to bring you updates on this partnership as it develops.
